Schrijfactie Burundi: laat journalist Floriane Irangabiye vrij
Op 2 januari 2023 veroordeelde een Burundese rechter journalist Floriane Irangabiye tot 10 jaar gevangenisstraf. Ze wordt gestraft omdat ze zich in een radio-uitzending kritisch uitliet over de regering.
Irangabiye woont al meer dan tien jaar in buurland Rwanda. Ze was in augustus 2022 in Burundi op bezoek bij haar familie toen ze werd opgepakt. Ze noemde tijdens een online radio-uitzending de Burundese overheid ‘wreed’ en zei ze dat burgers zich niet uitspreken uit angst om vermoord te worden. Dit audiofragment werd als bewijsmateriaal tegen haar gebruikt in de rechtszaal. Irangabiye opsluiten is een aanslag op de vrijheid van meningsuiting in Burundi.
Sinds 2015 protesteren Burundezen tegen onderdrukking en het sluiten van maatschappelijke organisaties en media. Tegen veel activisten die het land zijn ontvlucht, loopt een arrestatiebevel. Meer dan tien van hen werden bij verstek veroordeeld tot levenslange gevangenisstraffen.
Schrijfnaar de autoriteiten van Burundi en roep hen op om Floriane Irangabiye onmiddellijk en onvoorwaardelijk vrij te laten!

Dear Minister, Your Excellency (ambassade),
I am appalled by the conviction and arbitrary detention of journalist Floriane Irangabiye who on 2 January 2023 was sentenced to 10 years in prison and a one million Burundian francs fine by the High Court of Mukaza in Bujumbura for “undermining the integrity of the national territory”. Her lawyers appealed this decision on 23 January 2023.
Floriane Irangabiye was arrested on 30 August 2022. She was held without being formally charged until October 2022. Among other ‘evidence’, the prosecution presented comments made during the broadcasting of Radio Igicaniro, where she and her guests criticized the government of Burundi.
Floriane Irangabiye’s unfair prosecution is motivated by continuous efforts by Burundian authorities to clamp down on peaceful dissent, despite multiple promises by President Evariste Ndayishimiye to improve the country’s human rights situation.
I urge you to instruct the Prosecutor General of the Republic to ensure that Floriane Irangabiye is immediately and unconditionally released.

Schrijfactie VS: geef activist Leonard Peltier gratie
De 78-jarige Amerikaanse activist Leonard Peltier zit al meer dan 46 jaar achter tralies. Hij is lid van de American Indian Movement (AIM), een organisatie die opkomt voor de rechten van de oorspronkelijke bewoners van Amerika. In 1975 werden tijdens een confrontatie met AIM-leden twee FBI-agenten gedood. Peltier kreeg hiervoor tweemaal levenslang, maar heeft altijd volgehouden onschuldig te zijn. Zijn proces zat vol onregelmatigheden, zoals het achterhouden van bewijs.
Tot nu toe is Peltiers verlof steeds afgekeurd en staat er pas in 2024 een nieuwe zitting gepland. De kans is groot dat hij dit niet zal halen omdat hij ernstig ziek is. Peltier lijdt onder andere aan nier- en hartfalen en heeft een levensgevaarlijke aandoening aan zijn buikslagader. Het enige humane om te doen, is hem vrijlaten.
Schrijf naar president Biden van de VS. Roep hem op om Leonard Peltier gratie te verlenen.

Leonard Peltier is a member of the American Indian Movement (AIM). In 1975, during a confrontation involving AIM members, two FBI agents were killed. Leonard Peltier was convicted of their murders but has always denied killing the agents.
There are serious concerns about the fairness of proceedings leading to his trial and conviction, including for example the prosecution’s withholding of evidence that might have assisted Leonard Peltier’s defense. In light of these concerns, the former US Attorney who supervised the prosecution team post-trial, James Reynolds, has since called for clemency.
Leonard Peltier is now 78 years old, has spent more than 46 years in US prisons, and has been repeatedly denied parole. There are serious concerns about his deteriorating health. His lawyers submitted a new petition for clemency in 2021.
I urge you to grant Leonard Peltier clemency as a matter of justice.

Schrijfactie Swaziland: pro-democratie activist vermoord
Mensenrechtenadvocaat en pro-democratie activist Thulani Maseko uit Swaziland werd op 21 januari door het raam van zijn huis beschoten. Drie kogels raakten hem. Hij overleed voor de ogen van zijn vrouw. Naar alle waarschijnlijkheid was de aanval een vergelding voor zijn felle kritiek op de monarchie.
Maseko was de voorzitter van een groep samenwerkende politieke partijen en organisaties die democratie eisen in Swaziland (in 2018 omgedoopt tot Eswatini). De organisatie is een doorn in het oog van koning Mswati die al sinds 1986 aan de macht is. De koning melde een dag voor Maseko’s dood in een toespraak dat hij zou afrekenen met mensen die oproepen tot politieke hervormingen.
Schrijf naar de minister van Justitie van Swaziland. Roep hem op grondig onderzoek te doen naar Maseko’s dood.

I write to bring to your attention the unlawful killing of human rights lawyer, activist and former prisoner of conscience Thulani Maseko.
On 21 January 2023, Thulani Maseko was shot by unidentified assailants through an open window of his living room. There is reason to believe that Maseko was attacked in relation to his work as a human rights lawyer and defender.
Prior to his death, he chaired the Multi-Stakeholders Forum, a group of political parties and civil society groups calling for democratic reform in the country. He has previously been targeted by the state for demanding justice and criticizing the country’s judiciary. The day before he was killed, King Mswati III reportedly said in a public address that those who are calling for democratic reform in the country would be “dealt with”.
I urge you as the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs to ensure that the unlawful killing of Thulani Maseko is promptly, thoroughly, impartially, independently, transparently and effectively investigated and that anyone suspected to be responsible is brought to justice in a fair trial.
