Schrijfactie Rusland: geef Irina Danilovich medische zorg
Verpleegkundige en activist Irina Danilovich bracht misstanden binnen de gezondheidszorg op de Krim naar buiten. In april 2022 werd ze ontvoerd door de Russische veiligheidsdienst. Ze werd gemarteld om een bekentenis af te dwingen. Dat lukte niet, dus plaatsten ze explosieven in haar eigendommen. Daarvoor kreeg ze 7 jaar cel opgelegd.
Het gevangenispersoneel weigert Danilovich goede gezondheidszorg te geven. Ze is bijna doof door een blijvende oorinfectie. Daarom ging ze in maart 2023 in hongerstaking. Ze werd voor even naar het ziekenhuis gebracht. Daar bleek dat ze spoedeisende hulp nodig heeft. Die wordt tot op de dag van vandaag niet gegeven.
Schrijf vóór 1 oktober 2023 naar de autoriteiten van Rusland. Roep hen op om Irina Danilovich onmiddellijk vrij te laten en haar dringend medische hulp te geven.

Dear Human Rights Commissioner, Your Excellency (ambassade),
I am writing to ask you to take urgent action in support of nurse Irina Danilovich. She has been arbitrarily detained following an unfair trial in Crimea in December 2022, in retribution for her criticism of the healthcare system and for exposing corruption.
She was initially sentenced to seven years in prison. The sentence was reduced by one month following an appeal in June 2023, but her wrongful conviction was upheld.
Irina Danilovich is currently held in Simferopol’s detention centre SIZO-1, where she has been suffering from severe ear pain and headaches for months. The prison authorities have denied her adequate healthcare and she has now lost most of her hearing. The authorities’ denial of healthcare and other ill-treatment during Irina Danilovich’s incarceration has caused her condition to deteriorate and put her life at risk.
I urge you to take all steps within your authority to ensure that Irina Danilovich is released immediately and unconditionally, acquitted and cleared of any trumped-up charges.
Pending her release, she is urgently provided with adequate healthcare and is protected from torture and other ill-treatment.

Schrijfactie El Salvador: stop het vervolgen van onschuldige burgers
In maart 2022 stelde de overheid van El Salvador de ‘State of Exception’ in, met als doel bendegeweld te bestrijden. In de realiteit leidt deze ingreep tot het schenden van mensenrechten. Meer dan 60 duizend mensen zijn opgepakt en vastgezet zonder eerlijk proces. Soms omdat ze een crimineel verleden hebben, een tattoo hebben of gewoonweg uit een arme buurt komen.
Binnen de ‘State of Exception’ vervalt het recht op een aantal basis mensenrechten zoals het recht op juridische verdediging. Het gevolg is dat ongeveer 2 procent van de bevolking van El Salvador vast zit in overvolle gevangenissen. De gevangenissen zijn daarnaast in zeer slechte staat.
Schrijf vóór 1 oktober 2023 naar de president van El Salvador. Roep hem op om de ‘State of Exception’ te beëindigen en mensenrechten niet meer te schenden.

On 27 March 2022, El Salvador’s National Assembly passed a state of exception. Under the state of exception, more than 60,000 people have been subjected to arbitrary arrests, without access to due process guarantees, such as fair trials.
There are documented incidents of torture and ill treatment in the context of the state of exception – including against children – and to date, more than 150 people have lost their lives in state custody.
I call on you to:
• End the state of emergency and implement a security policy that protects the human rights of all.
• Ensure that security forces cease arbitrary detentions and guarantee the release of those who have been illegally detained.
• Guarantee the rights of all detainees to due process and personal integrity, without discrimination.
• Guarantee the right of the families of detainees to information about their whereabouts and well-being.

Schrijfactie Algerije: laat journalist Ihsane El Kadi vrij
De bekende Algerijnse journalist Ihsane El Kadi publiceerde een artikel over het leger van Algerije. Hij had grote zorgen over het inperken van de vrijheid van meningsuiting. In hoger beroep is zijn gevangenisstraf verhoogd van 5 naar 7 jaar, de hoogste straf voor een journalist in Algerije. Alsof dat nog niet genoeg is, besloot de rechter dat zijn mediabedrijf ook nog moest worden gesloten.
Officieel is hij veroordeeld omdat er vanuit het buitenland – van zijn dochter – geld is geïnvesteerd in zijn bedrijf. Dat geld zou zogezegd voor propaganda zijn. Maar, het is overduidelijk dat de autoriteiten van Algerije niets moeten hebben van onafhankelijke, kritische media. In de afgelopen 2 jaar zijn namelijk al 280 journalisten opgepakt.
Schrijf vóór 1 oktober 2023 naar de autoriteiten van Algerije. Roep hen op om Ihsane El Kadi onmiddellijk vrij te laten.

I am writing to express my deep concern about the conviction on appeal of journalist Ihsane El Kadi.
On 18 June his sentence was increased from five to seven years in prison. It appears to be an attempt to criminalize journalism.
Ihsane El Kadi was initially convicted on 2 April 2023 by the Sidi M’hamed first instance tribunal in Algiers, on charges of “receiving funds for political propaganda” and “harming the national security of the state”.
These charges relate to money which his daughter sent to him and which he invested into his media company – something which is not a criminal offense under Algerian law. The Tribunal also ordered the dissolution of El Kadi’s media company “Interface Media”.
The Algerian authorities have previously targeted El Kadi several times through judicial harassment and interrogations about his journalism. He remains detained in El Harrach prison in Algiers.
I urge you to immediately and unconditionally release Ihsane El Kadi and quash his conviction.
