Schrijfactie: Cuba straft activist keer op keer
Roberto Pérez Fonseca zit een gevangenisstraf van tien jaar uit omdat hij deelnam aan de protesten van juli 2021 in Cuba. Duizenden mensen gingen de straat op uit onvrede over tekorten aan voedsel en medicijnen, de economische crisis en het gebrek aan vrijheid.
Roberto wordt in de gevangenis slecht behandeld. Hij werd al minstens tien keer in een isolatiecel opgesloten, krijgt onvoldoende medische zorg en heeft beperkt contact met zijn familie. Ondertussen verslechtert zijn gezondheid door ernstige maag- en darmziekten.
In september 2026 werd Roberto volgens zijn familie voor de ogen van bewakers aangevallen en met een mes bedreigd door een medegevangene. Toen de dader niet werd gestraft protesteerde Roberto hiertegen. De gevangenisautoriteiten sloten hem daarop opnieuw op in een isolatiecel om hem te straffen. Hij blijft gevaar lopen op verdere mishandeling
Schrijf naar de President van Cuba. Roep hem op om Roberto Fonseca onmiddellijk vrij te laten.

Please allow me to express my concern about the prisoner of conscience Roberto Pérez Fonseca, who is serving a 10-year sentence in Quivicán prison for participating peacefully in the July 2021 protests.
Fonseca has reportedly faced physical abuse, inadequate medical care and repeated punishment cell confinement. He suffers from serious chronic illnesses that have worsened in prison.
I urge you to immediately and unconditionally release Roberto Pérez Fonseca.
Pending his release, ensure adequate healthcare and protect him from torture and other ill-treatment.

Schrijfactie: Burundi houdt kritische hulpverlener vast
Benjamin Babunga is een hulpverlener uit de Democratische Republiek Congo (DRC). Hij woonde en werkte jarenlang in buurland Burundi. Benjamin sprak zich regelmatig uit over het geweld in het oosten van Congo waar ook Burundi bij betrokken is. Daardoor lijkt hij het doelwit te zijn geworden van de autoriteiten. Op 26 mei werd hij in Burundi opgepakt. De autoriteiten beschuldigen hem van ernstige misdrijven zoals spionage en terrorisme. Hoewel twee rechters besloten dat hij op borgtocht mag vrijkomen, zit hij nog steeds vast.
Benjamin moet onmiddellijk worden vrijgelaten. Ook mag hij niet worden teruggestuurd naar de DRC. Daar loopt hij het risico te worden vervolgd vanwege zijn uitspraken.
Schrijf naar de autoriteiten van Burundi en vraag om Benjamin Babunga onmiddellijk vrij te laten.

I am concerned about the continued unlawful detention of Benjamin Babunga, a Congolese humanitarian worker who was arrested on 26 May in Bujumbura.
Benjamin Babunga was accused of espionage, terrorism and being a threat to national security. Both the High Court of Mukaza and the Court of Appeal have ordered his release, yet he remains detained. This violates Burundi’s Constitution and the country’s obligations under the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights and the ICCPR.
I ask you to do everything in your power to ensure to ensure his immediate release, respect the court rulings, protect his rights and safety, and prevent any transfer to the Democratic Republic of Congo, where Benjamin Babunga could face prosecution for peacefully exercising his right to freedom of expression.
I kindly ask you to bring my concerns to the attention of the responsible authorities in your country.

Schrijfactie: China houdt Ilham Tohti al ruim 12 jaar vast
De Oeigoerse Ilham Tohti was economieprofessor aan een universiteit in Beijing. Hij stelde de onderdrukking van Oeigoeren, een overwegend islamitische minderheid in China, aan de kaak. Zo sprak hij zich uit tegen willekeurige arrestaties en beperkingen van de vrijheid van godsdienst. Hij was geen voorstander van afscheiding van China, maar pleitte juist voor dialoog en gelijke behandeling. Toch werd hij in 2014 opgepakt en later veroordeeld tot een levenslange gevangenisstraf wegens ‘separatisme’. Voor zijn werk ontving hij meerdere internationale mensenrechtenprijzen.
Volgens betrouwbare bronnen is hij gemarteld, lange tijd in eenzame opsluiting gehouden en krijgt hij onvoldoende medische zorg.
Schrijf naar het hoofd van de hoogste rechtbank van China. Roep hem op om Ilham Tohti onmiddellijk en onvoorwaardelijk vrij te laten.

I am writing to express my concern about the continued imprisonment of respected Uighur professor Ilham Tohti. A well-known scholar and critic of China’s ethnic and religious policies in the Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region, he was widely recognized for his moderate views and efforts to promote dialogue.
In September 2014, he was sentenced to life imprisonment for “separatism”, solely for peacefully exercising his right to freedom of expression.
I respectfully urge the Chinese authorities to immediately and unconditionally release Ilham Tohti. Pending his release, I call on you to ensure that he is protected from torture and other ill-treatment in detention.
I also urge you to guarantee regular access to his family and lawyers, as well as an independent medical examination and any medical care Ilham Tohti may require.
