China 3,5 jaar cel voor kritische filmmaker Pinlin.
De Chinese filmmaker Chen Pinlin maakte een documentaire over de vreedzame protesten tegen de vergaande coronaregels en censuur in China. Dit viel niet in goede aarde bij de autoriteiten. Op 6 januari 2025 kreeg Pinlin 3,5 jaar celstraf opgelegd voor “het uitlokken van ruzies en problemen”.
Pinlin zette de documentaire een jaar na de protesten, in november 2023, online. Meteen daarna werd hij opgepakt. Pinlin wordt in de gevangenis slecht behandeld. De cel waar hij in zit is zo overvol dat hij gedwongen op zijn zij moet slapen. Ook mag hij slechts één uur per maand naar buiten.
Schrijf vóór 1 april 2025 de hoofdaanklager in China. Roep hem op om Chen Pinlin onmiddellijk vrij te laten en hem in de tussentijd goed te behandelen.

On 6 January 2025, Chen Pinlin was sentenced to three and a half years in prison on charges of “picking quarrels and provoking trouble”. He was arrested on 5 January 2024 and targeted for his efforts to uphold freedom of expression and defend other human rights, particularly through his film about the White Paper movement.
While detained, Chen Pinlin is subjected to inhumane treatment, including extremely overcrowded sleeping conditions and only being allowed one hour of outdoor activity per month.
I urge you to ensure the immediate and unconditional release of Chen Pinlin. Pending his release, he should be treated humanely and in accordance with the (Implementing Measures of the) Prison Regulations.

Nigeria: jonge demonstrant hangt 3 jaar cel boven het hoofd.
In oktober 2020 werd er in de Nigeriaanse hoofdstad Abuja massaal gedemonstreerd tegen politiegeweld. De jonge computerprogrammeur Imoleayo Michael deed mee en promootte de protesten op sociale media. Twee weken later werd hij met geweld opgepakt. Hij kwam op borgtocht vrij nadat hij 6 weken lang opgesloten zat in een ondergrondse cel. Zijn proces sleept maar voort. Hij wordt beschuldigd van verzonnen aanklachten en er hangt hem een celstraf van 3 jaar boven het hoofd.
In de vroege ochtend van 13 november 2022 vielen twintig gewapende mannen Michaels huis binnen. Ze sloegen zijn slaapkamerraam kapot en richtten een wapen op hem. Ze sloten zijn vrouw, moeder en zoontje van 7 maanden op in een kamer. Michael werd naar het hoofdkwartier van de veiligheidsdienst gebracht en opgesloten in een ondergrondse cel. Hij werd geboeid, geblinddoekt en vastgeketend aan een stalen kast. Hij sliep op de kale vloer en kreeg alleen maar pap met stenen te eten. Ook mocht hij geen contact hebben met zijn advocaat en familie.
Schrijf vóór 1 april 2025 naar de Minister van Justitie van Nigeria. Roep hem op om de aanklachten tegen Imoleayo Michael onmiddellijk in te trekken

Imoleayo Michael is a young computer programmer who in October 2020 joined other young people who were protesting against the Special Anti-Robbery Squad – or SARS – a police unit notorious for violence, extortion and killings.
Two weeks later, on 13 November 2022, armed men forcefully took him from his home to the state security service headquarters. He was locked in an underground cell where he was hand-cuffed, blindfolded, chained, and denied access to a lawyer or his family. He was released on bail after spending 41 days in detention.
However, Imoleayo Michael continues to face a long and drawn-out trial on trumped-up charges of ‘conspiracy with others to disturb public peace’ and ‘disturbing public peace’.
I urge you to drop all charges against Imoleayo Michael immediately.

Mexico: advocaat voor vrouwenrechten al maanden spoorloos.
Sandra Domínguez is een inheemse mesenrechtenactivist en advocaat uit Mexico. Ze richt zich vooral tegen geweld tegen vrouwen. Sinds 4 oktober 2024 is zij vermist. Die dag werden zij en haar man Alexander Hernández voor het laatst thuis gezien. Later werd ergens anders hun auto gevonden. Hun familie maakt zich grote zorgen om hun veiligheid. Het is heel goed mogelijk dat hun verdwijning te maken heeft met het werk van Domínguez. Sandra Domínguez voerde al meerdere rechtszaken namens overlevenden van geweld tegen vrouwen. Zo daagde ze een belangrijke ambtenaar voor de rechter. Hij zat in een WhatsApp-groep die seksueel getinte beelden van inheemse vrouwen deelde. Een van die vrouwen was Sandra zelf.
Schrijf vóór 1 april 2025 naar de gouverneur van de Mexicaanse staat Oaxaca. Roep hem op om al het mogelijke te doen om Sandra Domínguez en haar man levend te vinden.

I am deeply concerned for the life and safety of Sandra Domínguez, a Mexican indigenous woman, lawyer, and human rights defender, who disappeared on 4 October 2024.
Sandra Domínguez and her husband Alexander Hernández were last seen then in their home in the state of Oaxaca. According to local authorities, their vehicle was found later in the state of Veracruz, where local authorities and security forces are also searching for Domínguez and her husband.
Sandra Domínguez litigates cases of violence against women. She denounced local authorities sharing sexual images of indigenous women in 2020.
I urge you to use all necessary resources to find Sandra Domínguez and her husband alive, in coordination with their relatives and all the authorities responsible for the search and the investigation, as well as to bring those responsible for the disappearance to justice.
